What you'll experience
Yugoslavia's biggest secret, declassified in 2011.
ARK D-0 in Konjic is the most ambitious nuclear bunker built anywhere in former Yugoslavia — 6,500 square metres of concrete and steel, three underground levels, sealed-air capacity for 350 people for six months.
Built between 1953 and 1979 to protect Marshal Tito and the federal government from nuclear war. Cost roughly $4.6 billion in today’s money. Then never used.
After Yugoslavia broke apart in 1992 the bunker sat sealed — guarded but officially non-existent — until 2011 when the Bosnian government declassified it.
Today it’s a museum and a contemporary art biennale: original Cold War infrastructure (anti-blast doors, decontamination chambers, Tito’s preserved office) lives next to installations by 100+ Balkan artists.
The tour starts and ends in Konjic — €35/person, 3 hours including the 2-hour underground guided walk, the Konjic Old Bridge photo stop, and station pickup/drop-off. You arrange your own way to Konjic (Mostar–Konjic train or bus is straightforward and scenic, ~€5–7), or book our optional private transfer add-on from Mostar / Sarajevo / coast.
We pick you up at the Konjic train or bus station at your stated arrival time. After the tour, drop you back at the station for the onward leg. Optional: stay in Konjic for lunch at a riverside restaurant + UNESCO-listed woodcarving workshop visit (~2h add-on).
Tour runs Tuesday–Sunday year-round; bunker is closed Mondays. WhatsApp +387 61 209 388 with your origin city + arrival time for a confirmed quote (and transfer pricing if you want us to drive).

Armel grew up two streets from Stari Most. He's been running tours since 2009; before that he worked as a trainer in grassroots peace-and-reconciliation NGOs after the war. Ask him anything — about the war, the food, the music. He'll have an opinion, and probably a story to back it up.

FAQ
Frequently asked
How do I get to Konjic for this tour?
**Two ways**, your choice. **Public transport (recommended for budget):** Mostar → Konjic by train (~1h 15min, ~€5) or bus (~1h 10min, ~€7); Sarajevo → Konjic by train (~1h 30min) or bus (~1h 15min). **We pick you up at the Konjic station** at no extra cost — tell us your arrival time at booking. **Private transfer (we drive you door-to-door):** typical add-on prices Mostar → Konjic round-trip ~€90–120/vehicle (1–4 pax) or ~€150/vehicle (5–8 pax); Sarajevo → Konjic round-trip ~€120–150/vehicle. WhatsApp **[+387 61 209 388](https://wa.me/38761209388)** with your origin city and group size for an exact transfer quote.
Why does the tour start in Konjic instead of Mostar pickup?
**Practical reasons.** ARK D-0 is in Konjic, not Mostar — and most of our bunker-tour guests come from multiple origins (Mostar, Sarajevo, Konjic locals, day-trippers from coast). By starting at the bunker we keep the price tight (€35/person includes the €15 entry + 2h guided walk + station pickup) and let you pick how you arrive. **For travellers without a car**, the Mostar–Konjic train is genuinely scenic (Neretva canyon) and runs daily; many guests treat it as part of the experience. **For groups**, our private transfer add-on is competitive with chauffeur alternatives.
What is ARK D-0 / Tito's Bunker?
ARK D-0 (Armijska Ratna Komanda — Army War Command) is the most ambitious nuclear bunker built in former Yugoslavia. 6,500 m² across three underground levels, 280 m deep into the mountain near Konjic. Built in secret 1953–1979 to protect Marshal Tito and 350 federal staff for up to 6 months in case of nuclear war. Cost: roughly $4.6 billion in today's money.
Why was it declassified only in 2011?
After Yugoslavia broke apart in 1992, the bunker sat sealed and officially non-existent — the BiH army still maintained it but never confirmed its location. The state declassified and opened it for public visits in 2011, mostly as a contemporary art biennale venue. Cold War history meets Balkan modern art — uniquely Bosnian.
How long does the underground tour take?
About 2 hours inside the bunker with our guide. We walk approximately 1 km through the corridors. **Total tour duration from Konjic station back to Konjic station: 3 hours** (15 min drive in + 2h underground + 15 min drive back + 30 min for the Old Bridge photo stop and briefing). **Add transit time** from your origin city: Mostar–Konjic ~1h 15min each way, Sarajevo–Konjic ~1h 15min each way.
Is it claustrophobic inside?
Surprisingly less than people expect. The corridors are wide (anti-blast spec) and the rooms are large. The deepest parts feel like a hotel basement, not a tight tunnel. If you've been in a Metro station, you're fine. We can also leave the group early if you need air — just tell the guide.
What's the temperature inside the bunker?
Constant 18–22 °C year-round. Bring a light layer if you're sensitive to cool indoor air, but it's comfortable. The contrast is biggest in summer (40 °C outside, 20 °C inside).
Is the bunker wheelchair accessible?
Partly. The first level (entrance, briefing room, parts of the museum) is accessible via the original goods elevator. The second and third levels involve stairs and narrow passages — not wheelchair accessible. Email or WhatsApp us before booking and we'll plan a partial route.
Can kids do this tour?
Yes — kids 8+ love it (Cold War spy vibes). Free under 5, half-price under 12. Below 8 the history goes over their heads but they enjoy the bunker itself. The Neretva drive and woodcarving stop work for any age.
What should I wear?
Comfortable shoes (some walking on bare concrete). Layered clothing — bunker is 18–22 °C, hotter outside. Photographers: dark clothes don't reflect light during photos in the dim corridors. Inside flash is allowed.
Are photos allowed?
Yes — full freedom inside the bunker, including Tito's office, the communications centre, and the art installations. No tripods (corridors are narrow). Most guests come away with 100+ photos.
