First, a few words about Tito’s Cold War Bunker.

Tito, the lifelong Marshal and president of Yugoslavia had no illusions about  of the time in which he lived and he acted under a slogan – live and work as if we will have 100 years of peace, but be ready to go to war tomorrow. Tito was the person that wanted to be ready, just in case…

Following his strategy he ordered the Yugoslav Army to proceed with the construction of  secret underground facilities, all over Yugoslavia.

One of those Top Secret Underground facilities was build in total secrecy, some 60 kilometers from Mostar, in a small town called Konjic.

Атомска Ратна Команда – Atomic War Command, also known as the ARK , is a former nuclear bunker and military command center hidden near the town of Konjic, built during the Cold War with the purpose of protecting Tito and up to 350 members of High Command in the event of an nuclear war .

Tito’s Cold War Bunker, a horse-shoe shaped underground structure, built to withstand a 20-kiloton nuclear detonation, covers an area of 6,854 m² and contains over 100 rooms, including dormitories , conference rooms , operation centers, kitchens, toilets, and a fully equipped hospital.

Tito’s Cold War Bunker was among the most expensive structures built in the former Yugoslavia taking 26 years to build (from 1953 to 1979.) with a price tag of $4.6 billion.

Tito’s bunker is now partly open for public and serves as a meeting point for artists from across the region, Europe, and the world.

Within  the Project Biennial of Contemporary Art, it is transformed from  a site still officially under military control into a prestigious regional cultural institution at the forefront of emerging artistic trends.

The facility is open for visitors on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and the guided tour in duration of 60 min takes you for a tour of the entire facility.
